Academic Lecture by Prof. Efthymios Nicolaidis: Astronomy in Byzantium during the Mongol Period

The Astronomy in Byzantium during the Mongol Period: Similarities and Differences with Chinese Astronomy at the Same Period

Speaker Biography:

Efthymios Nicolaidis, from Athens, Greece, earned a Bachelor's degree in Physics from Université Paris Sud XI in 1978 and a Ph.D. in the History of Science from ÉHÉSS in 1982. He has held various positions at the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF), including Research Fellow, Associate Researcher, Senior Researcher, and Director of the Institute of Historical Research, ultimately becoming Emeritus Director of Research. In 2013, Nicolaidis was awarded the Chaire Blaise Pascal and served as President of the Division of History of Science and Technology of the DHST/IUHPST from 2013 to 2017. He was appointed Permanent Secretary of the International Academy of History of Science (IAHS) from 2017 to 2021 and again in 2023. His research primarily explores the intersection of science and religion, with a focus on Byzantine and Ottoman contexts, as well as the history of science policy and astronomy. Among his notable publications are "Science, Technology and the 19th Century State" and "Multicultural Science in the Ottoman Empire."
